Public consultation on August 26: 28 housing units in the Old Village

The Ville plans to sell some of its land and buildings to the Fédération intercoopérative en habitation de l’Ouest du Québec (FIHAB).

The Ville wants to facilitate access to affordable housing (cooperatives) for first-time home buyers in order to “revitalize” the Old Village (at approximately $300,000 per unit).

The first 4-unit project at 118 rue du Couvent would require a zoning change from single-family (H-1) to two-family (H-2).

During a public consultation held on July 31, the Ville only presented information on 4 of the 28 units; residents requested more information. Patrice Vachon of l’Association du lac Mercier, and Marc-André Paiement raised important points. You can watch their comments on YouTube at 16:00 and 39:00.

Following citizen feedback, the Ville withdrew the 118 rue du Couvent project from the municipal council agenda on August 11 and will hold a new public consultation on August 26 to present the entire project to the public.

Les Amis will participate in the consultation on August 26. We understand that the item concerning cooperatives will return to the municipal council agenda in September.

Our point of view: We encourage the Ville to be fully transparent on the process, desired results and full costs.
