LAGO, June 28, 2025
Two numbered companies involved in the controversial LAGO project have received protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). The total as of July 2 is $11.9 million.
Our point of view: We are disappointed, but not surprised. We have repeatedly warned the Ville about the risks of this project since our non-profit was created in August 2021.
LAGO’s construction began five years ago, but it’s uncertain if there will be enough funding to complete the project. The Ville should consider how it will protect residents from a development that currently does not comply with the fire safety regulations of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.
The total legal claims against the Ville amount to $200 million; 50% of this amount relate to the LAGO project. The Ville’s insurance policy is limited to a maximum of $9 million, and should be increased immediately to better protect taxpayers.
