Major problems between the fire department and the Ville

Karl Britten, president of the municipal firefighters’ association, stated that their relationship with the Ville had deteriorated: “Our work with Mr. Corbeil [Director, Human Resources Department] has soured due to his one-sided stance, absurd comments, and malicious actions. As part of his strategy, he has lied to us and misled us on numerous occasions.”

According to another firefighter who joined the department in 2006, the Mont-Tremblant Fire Department (service de sécurité incendie de Mont-Tremblant [SSIMT]) currently has enough resources to protect a population of around 9,000 people. However, last weekend, the town was bustling with 35,000 visitors. With staffing levels already strained, rumours of potential budget cuts within the department have surfaced. With the imminent arrival of Club Med, the SSIMT must consider expanding its operations instead of downsizing its workforce. Firefighters are particularly worried about this development.

Our point of view: Climate change has led to an increase in firefighting needs in recent years, particularly in a region surrounded by forest such as Mont-Tremblant. This highlights the importance of having a competent and dedicated team to address these challenges. The Ville must resolve its differences with the SSIMT firefighters. They are our first and last line of defence in the event of a crisis.
